Canvas GPA calculator
Paste your grades from Canvas or type them in, add credits, and get your semester and cumulative GPA. Your grades stay in your browser.
In Canvas, open your Dashboard and click View Grades. Select the course list (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A is fine), copy it, and paste it here. Course names and grades are picked out; everything else is ignored.
Runs in your browser. Your courses are saved in this browser only and are never sent to us.
How to check your GPA on Canvas
Short answer: Canvas does not show a GPA. It shows a grade for each course, and a GPA also needs each course's credit hours and your school's grade-point rules, which live in your school's student information system. Your official GPA is in your school's student portal and on your transcript. Unless your school has added its own GPA tool to Canvas, the fastest way to get the number is to take your Canvas grades and run them through the calculator above.
On the web
- Open your Dashboard and click View Grades in the sidebar. The Courses I'm Taking list shows each course with its current overall grade (Instructure's guide).
- Select the list (Ctrl+A or Cmd+A works), copy it, and paste it into Paste from Canvas above.
- Add each course's credits. Canvas does not list credit hours, so check your class schedule or the course catalog.
To see the details of one course, open it and click Grades in Course Navigation (Instructure's guide). Your instructor can hide the total grade. Canvas then shows two dashes (--) instead of a number, and the paste skips that course, so type its grade in yourself if you know it.
In the Canvas Student app
Open a course from the Dashboard and tap Grades (you may have to swipe to find it). Your total shows at the top of the page, as a percentage or points depending on how your instructor set up the course (Instructure's guides for iOS and Android). On the app's Dashboard, course cards also show each grade when Show Grades is turned on. Type those grades into the rows above.
The GPA formula
A GPA is an average of grade points, weighted by credits: a 4-credit course counts four times, a 1-credit lab once.
Example: Biology, 4 credits, A- (3.7 × 4 = 14.8); English, 3 credits, B+ (3.3 × 3 = 9.9); Calculus, 4 credits, B (3.0 × 4 = 12.0); History, 3 credits, A (4.0 × 3 = 12.0). That is 48.7 grade points over 14 credits: 48.7 ÷ 14 = 3.48.
For a cumulative GPA, add your earlier credits back in:
With a 3.20 over 45 credits, the term above gives (3.20 × 45 + 48.7) ÷ 59 = 3.27. Pass/fail, withdrawn and incomplete courses usually do not count, so the calculator leaves out a grade of P, NP, CR, NC, W or I.
GPA scale: letters, percents and points
Each percent is the lowest score for that letter. Canvas uses its default scheme unless your instructor set another one, and your syllabus has the final word.
| Letter | Canvas default | 10-point | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 94% | 93% | 4.0 |
| A- | 90% | 90% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87% | 87% | 3.3 |
| B | 84% | 83% | 3.0 |
| B- | 80% | 80% | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77% | 77% | 2.3 |
| C | 74% | 73% | 2.0 |
| C- | 70% | 70% | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67% | 67% | 1.3 |
| D | 64% | 63% | 1.0 |
| D- | 61% | 60% | 0.7 |
| F | below 61% | below 60% | 0.0 |
A+ counts as 4.0 here; some schools give 4.3. On the weighted scale, honors courses add 0.5 and AP or IB courses add 1.0 to every grade except an F, so an A in an AP class is a 5.0.

Common questions
Does Canvas show my GPA?
Not by default. Canvas shows a grade for each course, but a GPA also needs each course's credit hours and your school's grade-point rules, and those live in your school's student information system. Your official GPA is in your school's student portal and on your transcript. Unless your school has added its own GPA tool to Canvas, Canvas will not show one.
How do I find my GPA on Canvas?
Canvas gives you the course grades, not the GPA. Open your Dashboard and click View Grades to see every course with its current grade, copy that list, paste it into this calculator with Paste from Canvas, and add each course's credits. For your official GPA, check your school's student portal or transcript.
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add those up, and divide by the total credits. On a 4.0 scale an A is 4.0, an A- is 3.7, a B+ is 3.3, and so on down to an F at 0. Example: an A- in a 4-credit course and a B in a 3-credit course give (3.7 × 4 + 3.0 × 3) ÷ 7 = 3.40.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale for every course. Weighted GPA, used by many high schools, adds a bonus for harder classes: this calculator adds 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP or IB courses, on every grade except an F. Schools set their own bonuses, so check your school's policy before you rely on a weighted number.
Why does my percent turn into a different letter than on my transcript?
Cutoffs vary by course. Canvas's default grading scheme starts an A at 94% and an A- at 90%, while many syllabi use a 10-point scale that starts an A at 93%. Pick the cutoffs that match your course, or type the letter grade itself, which the calculator uses as it is.
How do I calculate my cumulative GPA?
Enter your current cumulative GPA and the credits it covers under the course list. The calculator turns them back into grade points, adds this term's grade points and credits, and divides again. Example: a 3.20 over 45 credits plus a 3.48 term over 14 credits gives a 3.27 cumulative GPA.
Is there a Canvas GPA calculator Chrome extension?
Yes, a few third-party extensions in the Chrome Web Store read your Canvas grades and show a GPA. This page does the same job without installing anything, and it only sees what you paste into it.
Are my grades sent anywhere?
No. The calculation runs in your browser, and your courses are saved only in this browser's local storage so they are still there when you come back. Clear all removes them.
