What an ALEKS knowledge check is

Students search for ALEKS knowledge check answers because the check feels like a test that decides everything. It is not quite that. ALEKS's own student overview, "All About Knowledge Checks", says Knowledge Checks "measure your mastery of topics" and are "adaptive, open-response, and no more than 30 questions".

Adaptive means the next question depends on your last answer. Open-response means you type the answer in the ALEKS answer editor; you do not pick from a list. Put together, there is no fixed list of questions, and that is why no ALEKS knowledge check answer key from Quizlet or Studocu matches yours.

The results do not show up as a test score. They show up in your ALEKS pie: the overview says the colored part of each slice is what you have mastered "based on what you got right on the Knowledge Check", and the gray part is what you have not mastered yet.

Initial knowledge check vs progress knowledge checks

Initial Knowledge Check Progress Knowledge Check
When At the start of every ALEKS course, after the Tools Tutorial. After a few hours of work and a set number of topics, or after an objective, depending on your course setup.
What it does Finds what you already know and builds your learning path and first pie. Checks that you still know what you learned, and moves topics to mastered or back to Needs More Practice.
Feedback None on right or wrong answers while you take it. Results in your pie and Reports afterwards.
Length No more than 30 questions, adaptive. The instructor guide says the Initial Knowledge Check is up to 25.

From ALEKS's "All About Knowledge Checks", the ALEKS Reference Guide and McGraw Hill's "What to Expect in ALEKS" student guide (sources below).

The Initial Knowledge Check is the one most students search for, and the one they most often get wrong. The ALEKS Reference Guide tells instructors to make sure students understand that it "is NOT a test". McGraw Hill's "What to Expect in ALEKS" student guide adds that ALEKS gives no feedback on right or wrong answers during it. When it ends, you see your pie and a score, then continue to your home page, where "Start My Path" opens Learning mode.

Why am I getting a knowledge check on ALEKS?

Because you reached a point your course set up for one. ALEKS's overview says every course starts with an Initial Knowledge Check, most courses add Progress Knowledge Checks "after you've spent a few hours in the system and learned a certain number of topics", and courses with objectives may add one after each objective. An older ALEKS student module guide gives a typical trigger of about 20 topics learned and five hours in ALEKS.

Your instructor can also schedule one. The instructor guide says Scheduled Knowledge Checks can be set at any time, can hold back the automatic ones for up to seven days before, and "can also be proctored". The Next Knowledge Check icon on your home page shows when the next one comes.

How the ALEKS pie changes

Each slice of the ALEKS pie has three parts. The instructor guide describes them: dark for topics mastered on a Knowledge Check, light for topics learned but not yet mastered, and gray for topics left.

  • Learning mode fills the light part. The student module guide says a topic counts as learned at 5 points: one point for each correct answer, one taken away for each wrong one, and double credit for two right in a row without opening Explanation.
  • Knowledge Checks fill the dark part. A learned topic becomes mastered when you answer a problem for it without help on a Knowledge Check.
  • Knowledge Checks can also take topics away. The guide calls this normal: "students do not retain everything they learn". Lost topics are marked Needs More Practice and move to the front of your topic list.

So a Knowledge Check that goes badly is not a lost grade. It is a list of topics to redo, and they come back first. Your results stay in Reports: the Progress History tile shows mastery after each check, and the Needs More Practice tile shows what you missed.

"I Don't Know" and why guessing hurts

ALEKS tells you to use "I Don't Know" when you do not know how to solve a problem. The student module guide shows the tip: choose "I Don't Know" only if you do not know how to solve the problem. ALEKS also reminds you that the button affects your result.

The reason to use it anyway is your learning path. A lucky guess or borrowed answer on a Knowledge Check marks a topic as known, and ALEKS stops teaching it. The overview puts it plainly: "Taking these Knowledge Checks seriously and honestly will save you TIME in the system. You won't struggle trying to learn topics you aren't ready for." A score above what you know means the next topics assume skills you do not have yet.

Can you skip a knowledge check?

No. ALEKS documents no way to skip one. What you can do is wait: the student module guide says you have up to 24 hours to start a Knowledge Check, unless your instructor changes that, and during that time you can keep working or review topics you learned. Use the "Review for Knowledge Check" link to practice first. Scheduled Knowledge Checks follow your instructor's due date.

Is the knowledge check proctored?

A Scheduled Knowledge Check can be. ALEKS lists proctoring for Quizzes, Tests and Scheduled Knowledge Checks; the automatic Initial and Progress checks are not on that list. The ALEKS and Respondus FAQs say instructors can require LockDown Browser, which blocks other apps, copying, printing and other websites, for a Quiz, Test or Scheduled Knowledge Check, and add Respondus Monitor, which records you with the webcam. The assignment list shows it before you start. Canvas Quiz Solver is off on those pages. More in can ALEKS detect cheating.

ALEKS answers in the page, Learning mode first

Canvas Quiz Solver is a Chrome extension that reads the ALEKS problem on your screen and shows the answer under it. It works on Knowledge Checks, Learning mode problems and assignments, in beta. It helps most in Learning mode: that is where you earn the 5 points for each topic, and a wrong answer costs a point.

How it works on ALEKS, in 3 steps:

  1. Add Canvas Quiz Solver to Chrome on your laptop.
  2. Open an ALEKS topic, click the extension icon and tap "Keep it on for this site".
  3. Read the answer card under the problem, type the answer into the ALEKS answer box and submit.

Off on LockDown Browser, Respondus and placement tests. It types nothing into ALEKS.

  • Typed math: it reads expressions, units, exponents and fractions in the problem, and tables.
  • Graphs: it lists the points or the shape to draw, and you draw it.
  • Not yet: some drawing tools, for example structure drawing in chemistry.
  • On a Knowledge Check: it works there too, but think before you use it. A topic marked mastered with help is a topic ALEKS stops teaching, and later checks test it again.

Common questions

Where can I find ALEKS knowledge check answers?

There is no answer key that matches yours. Knowledge Checks are adaptive and open-response, so each student gets different questions based on earlier answers. To see the answer for the problem on your screen, an extension like Canvas Quiz Solver shows it under the problem; you type it yourself.

Why am I getting a knowledge check on ALEKS?

Your course triggered one. Every course starts with an Initial Knowledge Check, and most add Progress Knowledge Checks after a few hours of work and a set number of topics learned, or after each objective. Your instructor can also schedule one.

Can you skip a knowledge check?

No. ALEKS documents no way to skip one. You get up to 24 hours to start it, unless your instructor changes that, and you can review learned topics during that time.

How many questions are on the ALEKS initial knowledge check?

No more than 30, and often fewer: it is adaptive, so the number depends on your answers. ALEKS's instructor guide says up to 25 for the Initial Knowledge Check.

Why did I lose topics after a knowledge check?

Knowledge Checks retest what you learned, and topics you could not do are taken out of your mastered count. ALEKS marks them Needs More Practice and puts them first in your topic list so you can relearn them.

Should I press I Don't Know on ALEKS?

Yes, when you do not know how to solve the problem. ALEKS tells students to use it instead of guessing. A guessed right answer marks a topic as known, and ALEKS stops teaching it.

Is there an ALEKS cheat sheet?

Not one that matches your questions, because Knowledge Checks are adaptive. Our guide on how to cheat on ALEKS covers every shortcut students try and what each one risks.

Does Canvas Quiz Solver work on ALEKS knowledge checks?

Yes, in beta, unless the check runs in LockDown Browser or Respondus. It shows the answer under the problem and you type it in. It helps most in Learning mode, because help on a Knowledge Check marks topics as mastered before you know them.
