Can ALEKS detect cheating? The short answer

ALEKS does not have a documented cheating detector that watches your screen on homework. What it has is a very detailed record of your work and an alert for a student who, in ALEKS's words, "may not be doing their own work". So the question is less "can ALEKS see my other tab" and more "does my record look like me".

Proctored work is different. Instructors can require Respondus LockDown Browser for an ALEKS quiz, test or Scheduled Knowledge Check, and add Respondus Monitor, which records you with the webcam. Schools often proctor ALEKS placement tests too. Each part below links its ALEKS or McGraw Hill source.

What your instructor can see in ALEKS

Your instructor sees reports, not your screen. The ALEKS Reference Guide for instructors describes them:

Report or alert What it shows
Time and Topic Report When and how long you log in each day, each problem you practiced and your answers. The Learning Sequence Log marks each correct answer, wrong answer and Explanation click with a time stamp, and shows the exact problem with your answer.
Unusual Learning Students "whose learning rate has increased significantly compared to their usual pace. This signifies that a student may not be doing their own work." The instructor can request a Knowledge Check to check.
Procrastination and Cramming Long periods with no work, then possible cramming. ALEKS emails these alerts to instructors each Sunday evening.
Failed Topics Topics you tried many times without success, updated in real time.
Scheduled Knowledge Check report Your time spent, when you submitted, topics completed and grade, next to the class average.

From the ALEKS Reference Guide (McGraw Hill, linked from the ALEKS support center).

The pattern that gets noticed is a mismatch: a pie that grows much faster than usual, or a Knowledge Check score far above your Learning mode work. ALEKS's Knowledge Check overview also says Knowledge Checks retest topics you already mastered, to make sure you still remember them.

Can ALEKS detect switching tabs or see other tabs?

ALEKS does not document it. None of the ALEKS guides we read, for students or instructors, lists a tab, focus or window log for normal homework, Learning mode or Knowledge Checks. That does not prove there is none: any web page can notice when it loses focus, so assume it could exist.

What ALEKS does log is time. Every trip to another tab adds minutes to the Time and Topic Report, and on a timed quiz the clock keeps running. When LockDown Browser is required, the question goes away: the ALEKS and Respondus FAQs say it prevents students "from accessing other applications, copying, printing, or visiting other websites".

Can ALEKS detect screenshots or AI?

ALEKS documents no screenshot detection and no AI detector for homework. A screenshot happens outside the page, and ALEKS answers are typed math, so there is no essay for an AI checker to read.

What ALEKS sees is the result: your answers, how long each one took, and how your pace compares with your usual pace. A run of quick, correct answers on hard topics is exactly what the Unusual Learning alert looks for. On a proctored assignment with Respondus Monitor, the webcam records you, and the dashboard flags suspicious behavior for the instructor.

LockDown Browser and the webcam on ALEKS

ALEKS works with Respondus. McGraw Hill's ALEKS support page says LockDown Browser "can be required for ALEKS tests, quizzes, scheduled Knowledge Checks, and PPL Placement Assessments", and that Respondus Monitor "uses students' webcams to record a video as they complete the assignment, and flags suspicious activity for the institution or instructor to review".

  • You see it first. Assignments that need LockDown Browser or the webcam show it in the assignment list. ALEKS calls Respondus Monitor "webcam" there.
  • It is a separate browser. ALEKS uses its own version of LockDown Browser, which you install once.
  • Recordings are reviewed. Instructors watch the session recordings in the Respondus Monitor Dashboard.

For what LockDown Browser records in general, read does LockDown Browser record you.

Is the ALEKS placement test proctored?

Often, yes, and your school decides how. McGraw Hill's remote proctoring page says ALEKS PPL has a network of 125+ proctoring centers and works with ProctorU and Respondus for "authentication, browser locking capabilities, video monitoring, and live proctors". The ALEKS PPL and Respondus FAQs describe LockDown Browser and the webcam for Placement Assessments.

Schools have reasons. In 2010, Campus Technology reported that the University of Arizona saw higher scores when its ALEKS placement tests ran without proctoring, and moved to online proctoring. Placement and homework are separate questions: a placement test decides your class, and Canvas Quiz Solver is off on ALEKS placement tests.

Where Canvas Quiz Solver fits

Canvas Quiz Solver puts the answer under the problem, inside the ALEKS page. It works on Knowledge Checks, Learning mode problems and assignments, in beta.

How it works on ALEKS, in 3 steps:

  1. Add Canvas Quiz Solver to Chrome on your laptop.
  2. Open your ALEKS topic or assignment, click the extension icon and tap "Keep it on for this site".
  3. Read the answer card under the problem, type the answer into the ALEKS answer box and submit.

Off on LockDown Browser, Respondus and placement tests. It types nothing into ALEKS.

  • No second tab. The answer is in the tab you are already in.
  • No screenshots. It reads the problem on the page: typed math with units, exponents and fractions, and tables. For a graph problem it lists the points or the shape to draw.
  • You type every answer. It does not type into ALEKS. You enter the answer in the ALEKS answer editor and submit it.
  • Your record is still your record. Time and answers are logged as for every student. Use it at your own pace, and remember that help on a Knowledge Check moves your pie ahead of what you know.

Some drawing tools, for example structure drawing in chemistry, are not supported yet. Answers come from AI and can be wrong. It is the same account as on Canvas: free answers to try, then $14.99 a month or $48.99 for a 4-month semester. More on the ALEKS answers page, and the methods students try in how to cheat on ALEKS.

Common questions

Can ALEKS detect cheating?

It can flag it. ALEKS logs your time, each problem and your answer, and its Unusual Learning alert tells instructors when a student's learning rate jumps, which ALEKS says may mean they are not doing their own work. On proctored work, LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor lock and record the session.

Can ALEKS detect switching tabs?

ALEKS does not document a tab log for normal homework or Learning mode. Any web page can notice when it loses focus, so it could exist. When LockDown Browser is required, you cannot open other websites or apps at all.

Can ALEKS detect screenshots?

ALEKS documents no screenshot detection. On an assignment with Respondus Monitor, the webcam records you, so a phone photo can be on video.

Is the ALEKS math placement test proctored?

Often. Your school decides. McGraw Hill offers LockDown Browser, Respondus Monitor webcam recording, ProctorU and a network of 125+ proctoring centers for ALEKS PPL placement tests.

Can online exams detect cheating?

Proctored ones can record a lot. On ALEKS, LockDown Browser blocks other apps and websites and Respondus Monitor records you with the webcam. Without proctoring, platforms like ALEKS mostly see your answers and timing, and they compare them with your usual work.

Can ALEKS tell if you use AI?

ALEKS documents no AI detector. Answers are typed math, so there is no essay to check. What ALEKS sees is your pace and results, and a sudden jump raises the Unusual Learning alert.

Does ALEKS record you?

Not on normal homework, as far as ALEKS documents. When your instructor requires Respondus Monitor for a quiz, test or Scheduled Knowledge Check, it records you with the webcam, and the assignment shows "webcam" first.
