Does ALEKS record you? Only with Respondus Monitor

McGraw Hill documents one way ALEKS records students: Respondus Monitor. Its ALEKS and Respondus FAQs call Monitor a "remote proctoring" companion to LockDown Browser that "uses webcam and video technology to record students and deter cheating". Respondus's own ALEKS page adds that Monitor "analyzes webcam video, screen recordings, and other data during online exams".

Monitor is a setting, not a default. ALEKS administrators turn it on for the school, and then instructors can require "LockDown Browser, or LockDown Browser with Respondus Monitor" for an assignment. In the assignment list, students see the word "webcam" instead of "Respondus Monitor", so a webcam label is your sign that the test will be recorded.

Monitor also costs something. The FAQ says a school can link its own license, or students can buy one in ALEKS; Respondus lists $10 for unlimited use in an ALEKS course and $5 for ALEKS PPL.

Is ALEKS proctored?

Some parts can be. The FAQ says LockDown Browser is included for "Quizzes, Tests, and Scheduled Knowledge Checks" in ALEKS Higher Education Math and Science, and for "Placement Assessments" in ALEKS PPL (Placement, Preparation and Learning). It is an instructor or school choice per assignment.

Placement is the part most often proctored. McGraw Hill's remote proctoring page says ALEKS PPL has "a network of 125+ centers" for proctoring and partners with ProctorU and Respondus for "authentication, browser locking capabilities, video monitoring, and live proctors". Your school's placement page says which one it uses.

The same documents do not name Learning mode, the topic-by-topic homework, as proctored or recorded.

The ALEKS LockDown Browser: what it does and when you need it

LockDown Browser is a separate app, not a Chrome tab. The FAQ says it "secures the testing environment by preventing students from accessing other applications, copying, printing, or visiting other websites" during an ALEKS quiz, test or scheduled Knowledge Check.

ALEKS needs its own version. The FAQ says ALEKS "requires a custom version of LockDown Browser that must be installed by the student", different from the one your school may use with its LMS. You are prompted to download it the first time you open an assignment that needs it, and after that the assignment opens the browser directly.

To install it, use the official ALEKS LockDown Browser setup page: it has the download for Windows, Mac and iPad, a setup check, and the note to open "LockDown Browser OEM" when prompted. The same page lists the Higher Ed Math and Science version as not compatible with Chromebooks.

Can your professor see you?

Only on a test with Respondus Monitor. The FAQ says the Respondus Monitor Dashboard "allows administrators and instructors to view the session recordings", that "the system will also flag suspicious behavior", and that teaching assistants get read-only access.

With LockDown Browser alone, the FAQ describes no camera and no recording: the browser only locks your computer during the test.

ALEKS does not describe AI detection or screenshot detection in the pages we checked. For what ALEKS does track on normal work, read can ALEKS detect cheating.

Where Canvas Quiz Solver runs on ALEKS

Canvas Quiz Solver works on the ALEKS work that is not locked down: Learning mode problems, Knowledge Checks and assignments, in beta. The answer card shows on the page, under the problem. It reads typed math (expressions, units, exponents and fractions) and tables, and for graph problems it lists the points or the shape to draw. You type the answer into the ALEKS answer editor yourself; the extension does not type into ALEKS.

Common questions

Can ALEKS record your screen?

Only through Respondus Monitor. Respondus says Monitor analyzes webcam video, screen recordings and other data during online exams, and ALEKS uses it only when your class requires it on a quiz, test, scheduled Knowledge Check or placement assessment.

Is the ALEKS test recorded?

It is recorded if the test requires LockDown Browser with Respondus Monitor, which ALEKS shows students as "webcam". A test that needs LockDown Browser alone locks your computer but does not use the webcam.

Can ALEKS tell if you use AI?

ALEKS and McGraw Hill do not describe AI detection in the public pages we checked. What they document is LockDown Browser, which blocks other applications and websites during a locked test, and Respondus Monitor, which records you.

Does ALEKS homework record you?

McGraw Hill documents recording only for Quizzes, Tests, Scheduled Knowledge Checks and placement assessments that require Respondus Monitor. It does not name Learning mode homework as recorded.

What LockDown Browser does ALEKS use?

A custom ALEKS version of Respondus LockDown Browser, which the student installs. It is different from the LockDown Browser your school may use in its LMS, and the ALEKS setup page calls it "LockDown Browser OEM".

Can my professor see me on the LockDown Browser?

Only if the test also uses Respondus Monitor. Then instructors and ALEKS administrators can view the session recordings in the Respondus Monitor Dashboard, which also flags behavior it finds suspicious. LockDown Browser alone has no webcam.

Can ALEKS detect screenshots?

ALEKS does not describe screenshot detection in the public pages we checked. LockDown Browser blocks copying, printing and other applications during a locked test, and Respondus Monitor can record your screen.

Does Canvas Quiz Solver work on recorded ALEKS tests?

No. It is off on LockDown Browser and Respondus pages and on ALEKS placement tests, and it gets around nothing. It works on Learning mode problems, Knowledge Checks and assignments that do not need LockDown Browser.
