Can Google Forms detect cheating? Tabs, locked mode and add-ons
A plain Google Forms quiz records your answers, your score and, if collected, your email; Google documents no tab or screenshot report. Locked mode on a school Chromebook blocks other apps and emails the teacher if you open another tab. Proctor add-ons add tab alerts, full-screen checks and webcam snapshots.
- Plain quiz: no tab, screenshot or AI report documented.
- Locked mode: teacher emailed if you exit or open another tab.
- Locked mode needs a school-managed Chromebook.
- Proctor add-ons such as Extended Forms report tab switches.
Our pickCanvas Quiz Solver shows an answer under each question of a plain Google Forms quiz, in the same tab. You pick and submit. It does not work in locked mode and is off on proctored pages.
Can Google Forms detect cheating? The short answer
It depends on how your teacher set up the quiz. There are three cases, and they see very different things.
- A plain Google Forms quiz records what you submit: your answers, your score, and your email if the form collects it. Google's help describes no tab, screenshot or AI report.
- Locked mode runs on school-managed Chromebooks. It blocks other apps and sites, and emails the teacher if you exit the quiz or open another tab.
- Proctor add-ons such as Extended Forms or AutoProctor add tab-switch alerts, full-screen checks, and webcam snapshots or screen video.
Every fact below links to Google's own help or the add-on's own page. Where Google does not document something, we say so, and "not documented" never means "impossible".
What each kind of Google Forms quiz can see

Can Google Forms see if you switch tabs?
On a plain quiz, Google's help on quizzes describes responses, summaries and grading, and no tab report. We know of no Google Forms setting that turns one on. That does not prove nothing is logged: any web page can notice when it loses focus. But Google does not show teachers such a log on a plain quiz.
Locked mode is where tabs matter. Google's locked mode page says: "If a student exits the quiz, or opens any other tab, the teacher is notified via email." It also says the teacher is emailed if a student reopens the quiz within 30 days.
The same goes for split screen and a second window: Google documents no check on a plain quiz, and in locked mode students cannot use other apps at all.
What locked mode changes on a school Chromebook
Locked mode is a quiz setting, under "Chromebook settings". Google lists what it needs: a Google Workspace for Education account, a Chromebook managed by the school for each student, and ChromeOS 75 or later (Google on locked mode). On a personal laptop or in Chrome on a Mac or Windows PC, it is not available.
In locked mode, Google says:
- Students cannot use other apps or browse other websites.
- Some extensions and keyboard shortcuts are turned off.
- The quiz collects email addresses and is limited to the school's domain.
- The teacher is emailed if a student exits the quiz or opens another tab, and if the student reopens it within 30 days.
Canvas Quiz Solver does not work in locked mode, and it does not try to. Locked mode is your teacher's choice to watch the quiz closely.
Proctor add-ons that do track tabs
Teachers who want more than a plain quiz but have no managed Chromebooks often add a proctor add-on. Two that rank for these searches describe their own features:
- Extended Forms ("Timer + Proctor for Google Forms") lists full-screen detection, tab-switch detection and camera snapshots, with reports of each violation (Extended Forms).
- AutoProctor lists tab-switch tracking and a video of the student's screen during the test; with its Google Forms add-on, students take the quiz on AutoProctor (AutoProctor features).
If a quiz opens with a proctor add-on, a timer and a full-screen request, treat it as proctored. Canvas Quiz Solver turns off on pages that show LockDown Browser, Respondus Monitor, Proctorio or Honorlock marks, and it gets around nothing. Do not use outside help on a proctored quiz.
Can Google Forms detect AI or copy and paste?
Google documents no AI detector and no copy-and-paste log in Google Forms. What a teacher does have is the answers themselves. Paragraph answers are read by a person, and the summary view shows frequently missed questions and score ranges for the class (Google on grading quizzes). A perfect score from someone who struggles in class, or a paragraph that does not sound like you, is what gets noticed.
An answer under each question, on a plain quiz
On a plain Google Forms quiz, Canvas Quiz Solver shows an AI answer under each question, in the same tab, so there is no second tab to switch to. Click the extension icon once on the open quiz and answers turn on in that tab; discreet mode keeps each answer behind a small icon until you click it. You pick or type every answer and submit the form yourself.
It reads multiple choice, checkboxes, drop-downs, short answer, paragraph and grids. It does not work in locked mode, and it is off on proctored pages. Answers come from AI and can be wrong. You get free answers to try, and Unlimited is $14.99 a month or $48.99 for a 4-month semester. More on the Google Forms answers page, and in how to see answers on Google Forms. Common questions
Can Google Forms see if you switch tabs?
Not on a plain quiz, as far as Google documents: its help describes no tab report. In locked mode on a school Chromebook, Google says the teacher gets an email if you exit the quiz or open another tab. Proctor add-ons such as Extended Forms also report tab switches.
Can Google Forms detect cheating?
A plain quiz records your answers, your score and, if collected, your email. It documents no cheating detector. Locked mode and proctor add-ons watch more: tabs, full screen, and with some add-ons the webcam or your screen.
Can Google Forms detect AI?
Google documents no AI detector in Google Forms. A teacher still reads paragraph answers and can compare them with your class work, and an answer that does not sound like you is what gets noticed.
Can Google Forms detect split screen?
Google documents no split-screen check on a plain quiz. In locked mode, Google says students cannot use other apps, so there is nothing to split the screen with. Some proctor add-ons flag leaving full screen.
Can teachers see when I open a Google Form?
On a plain quiz, Google's help describes responses, not visits: the teacher sees what you submit. In locked mode, Google says the teacher is emailed if you reopen the quiz within 30 days.
Does locked mode record your screen?
Google's help does not say it records the screen. It says locked mode blocks other apps and websites, turns off some extensions and shortcuts, and emails the teacher if you exit or open another tab.
