Can MyOpenMath detect cheating or switching tabs?
MyOpenMath does not watch your screen. It keeps your last answer and attempts on each question, when you started and submitted, how long questions were on screen, a login log, and an activity log with an IP-based identifier. We found no tab, copy or screenshot log in its help or its code.
- The gradebook detail shows your version of each question, your last answer and the attempts used.
- It also shows total time questions were on-screen.
- The activity log marks each assessment start with an identifier based on your IP address.
- Inside Canvas, grades can go to Canvas each time you complete a question.
- Tests can have a password, a hard time limit and a course lock.
Our pickCanvas Quiz Solver works on MyOpenMath. The answer shows under each question, in its own tab or inside a Canvas page, and you type it in yourself. It stays off on proctored tests.
What your instructor sees in MyOpenMath
Your instructor sees the gradebook and two logs, not your screen. MyOpenMath runs on IMathAS, which is open source, so MyOpenMath's help and the IMathAS code both describe them:
| Record | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Gradebook detail | "The specific assessment that they received and the last answer they provided, as well as their score on each question and the attempts used." |
| Times | "Total time questions were on-screen" and "Time spent on this version" (IMathAS gradebook labels). |
| Login log | Each time you logged in, and about how long you stayed (viewloginlog.php). |
| Activity log | Each assessment you started or resumed, "an identifier based on the IP address" of your computer, and assessments opened "via LTI" from your school's LMS (viewactionlog.php). |
From MyOpenMath's help page and the IMathAS code on GitHub (sources below).
The code itself warns instructors that the IP identifier "can change if the student switches from a phone to a laptop" or "if their wifi connection resets". So the risk is a record that does not look like you: a long set done in minutes, or homework far above your test scores.
Can MyOpenMath detect switching tabs?
Not as far as we can find. MyOpenMath's help lists no tab-switch log, and we searched the IMathAS assessment player code for tab, focus and copy tracking and found none. That does not prove it can never exist: any web page can notice when it loses focus, and your school can add its own tools.
What MyOpenMath does keep is time. A trip to another tab adds to the time questions were on screen. On a timed test, the help page says an instructor can "Kick student out at timelimit", and late submissions are then rejected.
Can MyOpenMath detect screenshots, copy and paste or AI?
MyOpenMath documents no screenshot, copy and paste or AI detector. A normal web page gets no signal when you use your computer's screenshot tool. Math answers are scored by the computer, so there is no essay for an AI checker to read.
Questions are randomized, so shared answers rarely match. The help page says that on homework, "different students will receive different versions of the questions" when they ask for a similar problem.
MyOpenMath inside Canvas
Many courses open MyOpenMath from Canvas through LTI. MyOpenMath's help says that, when configured, "grades will be sent from MyOpenMath to the LMS immediately every time the student completes a question". With the usual setup, students "must access assignments via the LMS", and the activity log notes each assessment opened that way.
For tests, IMathAS lets the instructor set a password, a time limit and "Lock student out of the rest of the course until submitted" (IMathAS assessment settings). A school can also put the test behind LockDown Browser, Proctorio or Honorlock. Canvas Quiz Solver turns off on those pages. Read does LockDown Browser record you before one.
Where Canvas Quiz Solver fits
Canvas Quiz Solver puts the answer under each question, inside the MyOpenMath page. It also works on Lumen OHM, WAMAP and XYZ Homework.
How it works on MyOpenMath, in 3 steps:
- Add Canvas Quiz Solver to Chrome on your laptop.
- Open your assignment and click the extension icon once. Tap "Keep it on for this site", or, inside a Canvas page, pick "Turn on for MyOpenMath" one time.
- Click the small icon under a question, then type the answer into MyOpenMath and submit it yourself.
Off on proctored tests. It types nothing into MyOpenMath.
- No second tab and no copying. The answer is in the tab you are already in, with your own numbers.
- Your record is still your record. Your answers and time are logged as for every student.
It does not read file upload questions. Answers come from AI and can be wrong. It is the same account as on Canvas: free answers to try, then $14.99 a month or $48.99 for a 4-month semester. Common questions
Does MyOpenMath detect cheating?
It has no documented cheating detector. It gives your instructor evidence instead: your last answers, attempts used, time questions were on screen, when you logged in and an IP-based identifier when you start an assessment. The instructor decides what that evidence means.
Can MyOpenMath see if you switch tabs?
MyOpenMath's help documents no tab-switch log, and we found none in the open-source IMathAS assessment player. That does not prove there is none, since any web page can notice when it loses focus, and a proctoring tool your school adds can record tabs.
Does MyOpenMath track your IP address?
Partly. The activity log shows an identifier based on your IP address each time you start or resume an assessment. The IMathAS code warns instructors that it changes when you switch devices or your wifi resets.
Can MyOpenMath detect screenshots or AI?
MyOpenMath documents nothing about screenshots or AI. A normal web page gets no signal from your computer's screenshot tool, and math answers are scored by the computer. On a proctored test, the proctoring tool decides what is recorded.
Does Canvas see my MyOpenMath work?
Canvas sees your grade. When the course is set up through LTI, MyOpenMath sends the grade to Canvas each time you complete a question. Your answers, attempts and times are in the MyOpenMath gradebook detail.
