What the Canvas quiz log can record

Canvas is a website, so it records what happens on its own page. On a Classic Quiz, the quiz log lists four kinds of entry with a time each: a question viewed, a question answered, Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page and Resumed. Instructure says Stopped viewing "displays when a student navigates away from the quiz (closes the browser tab, opens a new browser tab, or navigates to a different program)" (Instructure quiz log guide).

Behind those lines are two events, page_blurred and page_focused, and both carry "event_data": null (Canvas quiz events API). There is no field for a tab, a website, an app or an AI tool. New Quizzes shows "moments of stopping and resuming the quiz" on its Moderate page, and with Detect Multiple Sessions on, admins can see the browser and operating system of each session.

We found no Instructure documentation about Gemini, Google Lens or AI browsers. So for each tool the question is the same: does it take focus away from the quiz page, or open a new tab? More in what Stopped viewing means and the Canvas quiz log, explained.

Can Canvas detect Gemini in Chrome?

Gemini in Chrome is Google's assistant built into the browser. You click Ask Gemini at the top of Chrome and it opens in a side panel. By default it uses the content of your current tab, you can share up to 10 open tabs, and with Select from screen you draw boxes around the parts of the page you want to ask about (Use Gemini in Chrome, Share parts of your screen).

Google's help page lists what you need: be 13 or older in a supported region, use a Mac, Windows computer or Chromebook Plus, and sign in to Chrome. It does not work in Incognito, and "if you are over 18 and use Gemini in Chrome with a work or school Google Account, access must be enabled by your administrator". Google also sells auto browse, an agent that "handles multi-step chores on your behalf", to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S.

What Canvas sees. No quiz log event names Gemini. The side panel sits in the same window, so the quiz stays on screen. Whether clicking or typing in the panel makes the quiz page lose focus is not documented by Google or Instructure, and we have not tested it, so we do not claim it either way. Gemini also has a Pop-out chat button; a popped-out chat is a separate window, and clicking into another window is what writes Stopped viewing.

Where it is slower. To be fair to Gemini: it reads the page, so you do not copy anything, and it comes with Chrome. But it answers in the panel, one prompt at a time. You ask about the question, read the reply, then find the matching option on the page yourself.

On a proctored exam. Honorlock's desktop app relaunches Chrome in a secure state that "prevents the use of native browser AI Tools like Google Lens and Gemini", and it scans for disallowed programs such as ChatGPT (Honorlock test taker guide). LockDown Browser is a separate browser, so Chrome's built-in tools are not in it.

Can Canvas detect Google Lens?

In Chrome on a computer, you open Search this tab with Google Lens from the More menu or by right-clicking the page. Then you click, highlight or drag over anything on the page, or type a question about it, and the answers show in the side panel. A follow-up question takes you to AI Mode. Google says that "a screenshot of the page and page data will be sent to Google" (Search with Google Lens in Chrome).

What Canvas sees. No log entry names Lens. One part of the Lens flow is documented and matters: "to open a result in a new tab, select the search result". Opening a new browser tab is on Instructure's own list of what writes Stopped viewing. Whether selecting an area or typing in the Lens panel takes focus from the page is not documented, and we have not tested it.

Where it is slower. Lens is a search tool. You get search results and an AI answer for the part you selected, and you still match it to the options yourself. On a proctored Honorlock exam, Lens is turned off with Gemini.

AI browsers on Canvas: Comet, ChatGPT Atlas and Gemini auto browse

An AI browser, also called an agentic browser, has an assistant built in that can read the page and act on it: click, type and move through steps for you.

Perplexity Comet. Perplexity says Comet "is available on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android platforms", and "we will always provide a free version of Perplexity for all users, and that will include Comet" (Comet FAQ).

What schools found. Colorado State University's academic integrity office wrote that "new, widely available AI-powered browsers (like Perplexity or Atlas) can successfully complete Canvas assignments, quizzes, and exams", that agentic browsers "can manipulate the quiz page itself to select answers and re-order items", and it recorded one scoring 5/5 on a sample quiz. Its advice to faculty: use Respondus LockDown Browser "for all Canvas-based assessments" (CSU TILT). So the main risk of AI browsers is not a detector. It is that more quizzes move into LockDown Browser, where no AI browser and no extension runs.

ChatGPT Atlas is gone. OpenAI's release notes say "Atlas is scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026", and point Chrome users to "the ChatGPT Chrome extension or sidebar, where available" (ChatGPT release notes). Guides that tell you to take a Canvas quiz in Atlas are out of date.

What Canvas can still see. Every saved answer has a time, so a quiz answered in seconds per question shows that in the log. In New Quizzes, admins can see the browser and operating system in multi-session details; what an AI browser reports there is not verified. Whether an agent working the page writes Stopped viewing is not documented.

Tool Where the answer shows What the quiz log can show Cost (their pages)
Gemini in Chrome Side panel, or a popped-out window Panel: not documented. A separate window: Stopped viewing when you click into it. Built into Chrome; auto browse for AI Pro and Ultra (U.S.)
Google Lens Side panel; a result opens in a new tab New tab: Stopped viewing. Panel: not documented. Built into Chrome
Perplexity Comet Its assistant, or it acts on the page Not documented. Answer times are logged. Free version
ChatGPT Atlas Nowhere: retired on August 9, 2026 Not applicable; the browser no longer works Discontinued by OpenAI
Canvas Quiz Solver Right below each question Viewed and Answered, as for every student. The extension causes no Stopped viewing. Start free, then $14.99 a month

Side panels and agents are made for every website. Canvas Quiz Solver is made for Canvas quizzes. It puts the answer right below the question, inside the Canvas quiz page. You do not type a prompt, read a panel, take a screenshot or open a new tab, so there is no page switch for the quiz log to record. It works on Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes, and you can start free.

The in-page alternative: Canvas Quiz Solver

Canvas Quiz Solver is a Chrome extension that does the AI step on the quiz page itself:

  1. Add Canvas Quiz Solver to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open your Canvas quiz as usual. A Get Answer button appears on each question.
  3. Click it. The answer appears right below the question it belongs to.

The answer sits next to the options, so there is nothing to match back from a panel. It reads multiple choice, true or false, short answer, fill in the blank, matching, numerical, essay, ordering and categorization questions, on Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. The answers come from AI, so they can be wrong: read each one before you pick it.

A web page cannot list the Chrome extensions you have installed: Chrome runs an extension's content script in an isolated world. See does Canvas detect Chrome extensions. The quiz log still shows which questions you viewed and when you answered, as for every student.

It runs in Chrome on a computer, on Canvas only. It is not for proctored exams: it does not run in LockDown Browser or Respondus, and Honorlock and Proctorio can turn Chrome extensions off. You can start free, then one plan is $14.99 a month.

Common questions

Can Canvas detect Gemini in Chrome?

Not by name. No Canvas quiz log event names Gemini or any AI tool; Canvas logs when the quiz page loses focus. Whether typing in the Gemini side panel counts is not documented by Google or Instructure, and we have not tested it. A popped-out Gemini chat is a separate window, and clicking into another window can write Stopped viewing.

Can Canvas detect Google Lens?

Not by name. Lens sends a screenshot of the page to Google and shows results in a side panel. Opening a Lens result opens a new tab, and Canvas logs a new tab as Stopped viewing. Whether the Lens panel itself takes focus from the quiz page is not documented.

Can Canvas detect AI browsers like Comet or ChatGPT Atlas?

Canvas has no documented AI browser check, and no log entry names a browser's assistant. Every saved answer is still logged with a time, and in New Quizzes admins can see the browser and operating system in multi-session details. Some schools respond by moving quizzes into LockDown Browser, as Colorado State University's academic integrity office recommends.

Can Perplexity Comet take a Canvas quiz?

Colorado State University's academic integrity office says agentic browsers such as Perplexity can read the questions and select answers on a Canvas quiz, and it recorded one scoring 5/5 on a sample quiz. Perplexity says Comet runs on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, with a free version.

Is ChatGPT Atlas still available?

No. OpenAI's release notes say Atlas was scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026, and point Chrome users to the ChatGPT Chrome extension or sidebar instead.

Can Honorlock detect Gemini or Google Lens?

Honorlock's test taker guide says its secure Chrome relaunch prevents the use of native browser AI tools like Google Lens and Gemini, and its desktop app scans for disallowed programs such as ChatGPT before the exam starts.

What is the fastest way to get AI answers on a Canvas quiz?

One that keeps the answer on the quiz page. Gemini and Lens answer in a side panel, so you ask, read and match the reply to the options. Canvas Quiz Solver adds a button to each question and shows the answer right below it, on Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. You can start free.
