What Canvas records during a quiz

Canvas is a website, so it only records what happens on its own page. For a Classic Quiz that is the quiz log. Instructure calls Quiz Log Auditing "currently a course opt-in feature"; when it is on, the log starts when you begin the quiz and holds four kinds of entry:

  • Viewed and Answered - which question was on screen, and when an answer was saved.
  • Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page - "displays when a student navigates away from the quiz (closes the browser tab, opens a new browser tab, or navigates to a different program)".
  • Resumed - "displays when the student has returned".

Each entry is an event and a time. The Canvas API reference for quiz submission events lists the focus pair as page_blurred and page_focused with "event_data": null: no field for the tab, site or app you went to. New Quizzes has its own log on the Moderate page, which shows start and finish, each event, the elapsed time and "moments of stopping and resuming the quiz".

With Detect Multiple Sessions on, New Quizzes records the client IP, browser session ID, browser and operating system for admins to view, and you get a notification if you try to continue the quiz in a different session. A role with the New Quizzes - view IP address permission can see IP addresses on the activity log. A Classic Quiz can be locked to the IP addresses of a specific computer lab, and timed quizzes "do not pause if the student navigates away from the quiz".

What is not in any of it: your screen, other tabs' names or addresses, your phone, your clipboard, and your extensions. The instructor opens the log by hand, one student at a time, and Instructure documents no alert when you leave the page. Logs are kept for six months, and Instructure says that "quiz logs are not intended to validate academic integrity or identify cheating for a quiz". ChatGPT or Google in a second tab

The most common method, and the one the quiz log was built to see. Opening a new tab is on Instructure's own trigger list, so every trip writes a Stopped viewing and Resumed pair. The log never names ChatGPT, but a gap before every answer tells its own story, and a timed quiz keeps counting while you copy, switch, paste and switch back. Split screen or a second window

The browser does not care where a window sits on the screen, only where focus is. MDN describes the blur event as firing when something has lost focus, and focus moves when you click or type in the other window. Click into the chat to paste a question and the log can write Stopped viewing; reading a window you do not touch moves no focus. Your phone

A phone next to the laptop is outside Canvas, so a plain quiz log says nothing about it. The cost is time: you retype or photograph each question and carry the answer back by hand, while the log stamps every answer you save. Take the quiz in a phone browser and the rules flip: the visibilitychange event fires when a phone "switches from the browser to a different app".

Quizlet and saved flashcards

Flashcards help only when your instructor reuses questions from a public set. Canvas also lets instructors shuffle the answers of a quiz, so a saved card may not match the screen, and a set open in another tab brings back the second-tab gaps.

Group chat or a friend

Canvas cannot read your messages, but the grader sees every student's answers, so one wrong answer copied across a group can repeat through the class. A chat app on the same computer also takes focus from the quiz page.

An answer extension inside the quiz page

The one method that works on the quiz page itself. The extension reads the question where it is and puts the answer under it: no second tab, no window to click into, no question to retype, so no page switch for the quiz log to record.

Why Canvas Quiz Solver is the method that does not leave the page

A web page cannot list the Chrome extensions you have installed. Chrome runs an extension's content script in an isolated world, and by default no extension files are web accessible, which stops sites from fingerprinting your extensions. It reads multiple choice, true or false, short answer, fill in the blank, matching, numerical, essay, ordering and categorization questions, on Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. The answers come from AI, so they can be wrong: read each one before you pick it.

One practical tip: set it up before the quiz starts. The one-time consent page opens in its own tab when you install, and so does checkout when you subscribe, so do both before you open the quiz.

What Reddit gets right and wrong about cheating on Canvas

The top Reddit thread for this search is a student whose professor said Canvas showed that several students had clicked out of the exam. Reddit gets that part right: leaving the page is what Canvas records. Three other ideas do not hold:

  • "Canvas can't see anything." Wrong. It cannot see your screen, but it logs every time the quiz page loses focus, with a time.
  • "Come back within 15 seconds and it does not count." The figure comes from a forum answer quoted in a thread about whether Stopped viewing can reveal cheating. Instructure's quiz log guide gives no time threshold, so plan as if any focus change can be logged.
  • "Use incognito." It changes nothing. The quiz page writes the log while it is open; history and cookies play no part.

Proctored exams: LockDown Browser, Honorlock, Proctorio and Respondus Monitor

The quiz log only writes down what happened on a web page. A proctoring tool controls the browser, and sometimes the computer, while the exam runs. Here is what each one says it sees and blocks.

Respondus LockDown Browser says "right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts and task switching are disabled", and Canvas's quiz options page says it "does not allow other windows to be opened during the quiz". With Respondus Monitor, students use a webcam to record themselves, and flagged events are available to the instructor.

Honorlock runs as a Chrome extension, and its FAQ also describes a desktop Honorlock Application that some schools add. With BrowserGuard on it can "close already open tabs or block new tabs", and it can "disable extensions after consent from the user for the duration of the exam". Proctorio's homepage lists the settings a school can switch on, and its integrity page describes monitoring with "any combination of webcam, screen sharing, audio, and web traffic". Its terms say some of its services "may require you to install a browser extension".

You can usually tell when a quiz is proctored: the quiz page or syllabus says so, and the exam asks you to open LockDown Browser or add the Honorlock or Proctorio extension before it starts, often with a camera and microphone check like Proctorio's. Does Canvas detect if you split screen?

Only when the quiz page loses focus. Looking at the other half of the screen does not move focus; clicking or typing in it does, and that writes Stopped viewing. Proctoring tools go further: Honorlock can detect window resizing and require a single screen.

Can teachers see your Chrome extensions on Canvas?

No. A web page cannot ask Chrome which extensions you have installed, and Canvas gives instructors no extension report.
