Can Canvas detect copy and paste?
No. Canvas quiz logs do not record clipboard events, so copying a question or pasting an answer creates no entry of its own. Copying from another window can make the quiz page lose focus, and that shows as "Stopped viewing". Pasted essays and discussion posts can still be scanned by Turnitin after you submit, and LockDown Browser blocks paste outright.
What the quiz log records instead
Canvas keeps a log for every quiz attempt. On Classic Quizzes your instructor opens it from your submission page and reads a list of timestamped events. Instructure's quiz log guide lists four kinds: viewed (and possibly read) a question, answered a question, stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page, and resumed.
Copy is not on that list. Paste is not on it either. The log has no clipboard column, no keystroke record, and no field that says where your text came from. No Instructure guide describes a clipboard logging feature anywhere in Canvas.
Instructure also states the purpose of the log plainly: "Quiz logs are not intended to validate academic integrity or identify cheating." Logs stay available for six months.
New Quizzes behaves the same way here. Your instructor opens the Moderate page and then View Log to see when the attempt started, when it finished, and each event in between. Session details can flag that one attempt used several devices or browsers, and multi-session details carry the client IP, browser and operating system. Those details can only be viewed by admins unless your school grants teachers the extra IP permission. Still nothing about the clipboard.
Copying from another window makes the page lose focus
Canvas quiz logs record no clipboard event, and no Instructure guide describes clipboard logging. What the log can show is the moment you leave the page to reach the text.
Any web page can tell when it stops being the active page, because the browser fires a visibility change event the moment focus moves away. Canvas listens for that and writes "Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page". When you come back it writes "Resumed".
So opening a second tab, a PDF, a chat window or a notes app to copy something leaves a gap in the log with a timestamp on each side. Here is what that gap does not contain:
- which tab, site or application you moved to
- what you copied, or that you copied anything at all
- anything about your screen or your keyboard
Focus loss has ordinary causes too. A notification, a second monitor, a dropped connection or a closed laptop lid produces the same pair of entries as a deliberate switch. The log records the timing and nothing about the reason. Instructure states in its quiz log guide that "Quiz logs are not intended to validate academic integrity or identify cheating."
Essays and discussions: Turnitin similarity
Pasting matters after you submit, not while you type. Canvas has no plagiarism or AI checker of its own. Schools add one, usually Turnitin, as a plug-in on an assignment. A connected checker scans the text you submit - essays, discussion posts and file uploads - and it runs after the submission, not while you fill the box.
Turnitin also offers an AI writing detection model that estimates how much of a document reads as AI generated. Read those numbers carefully. Turnitin's own guide says scores between 0 and 19% carry a higher false-positive rate and marks them with an asterisk. The same guide says the score "should not be used as the sole basis for adverse actions against a student" and calls for "further scrutiny and human judgment".
These tools run on submitted text: essays, discussion posts and file uploads. A multiple-choice selection, a numeric answer or a one-word fill-in-the-blank gives them nothing to compare.
When paste is blocked
One setup does control your clipboard: Respondus LockDown Browser. It is a separate native application, not Chrome. It disables copy and paste, and Chrome extensions never load in it. Respondus lists the rest of what the browser restricts on its own product page.
Respondus Monitor is the camera layer on top. It captures video and sound from your camera and microphone for as long as the attempt runs, then marks moments in that recording for your instructor to look at later.
Inside LockDown Browser, paste is blocked and Chrome extensions do not load, so the clipboard question is settled before the first question appears. The Turnitin points above still apply to any essay or discussion post you submit.
Quiz answers without copy and paste
Most copy-and-paste worry during a quiz is really a focus problem. Canvas quiz logs record no clipboard event, and no Instructure guide describes clipboard logging; leaving the page is the part that lands in the log. So the practical move is to keep the answer where the question already is.

Common questions
Can professors see if you copy a quiz question?
No. The Classic Quizzes log records viewing a question, answering it, stopping and resuming, each with a timestamp. Copying text is not one of those events. If you switched to another window while you copied, the log shows that the page lost focus, not what you copied.
Does Canvas detect paste in a text box?
No. A quiz answer box is an ordinary web field, and the quiz log lists no paste event. Your instructor sees the answer you saved and the time you saved it. On essay assignments, a plagiarism or AI checker can review the submitted text after you turn it in.
Does Turnitin see copy and paste?
Turnitin compares the text you submit with sources it has indexed and reports the matches. It never sees your clipboard, so pasted text and retyped text look the same to it. Its AI writing score is a separate estimate that Turnitin says needs human judgment.
Does Canvas detect copy paste in discussions?
Canvas does not log the paste itself. A discussion post is submitted text, so if your school turned a plagiarism or AI checker on for discussions, that tool can scan the words you posted and report matches or an AI writing score.
Can Canvas detect right-click?
No. Right-click is not in the quiz log event list. Respondus LockDown Browser is the exception: it disables right-click, copy and paste, printing, screen capture and task switching for the whole attempt, because it replaces your browser with its own.
