Can Canvas see screenshots? No, but here is what it logs
No. Canvas cannot see a screenshot you take on your computer or phone. It logs when you leave the quiz page.
- A screenshot happens outside the web page. No web standard tells a page you took one, and the Canvas quiz log has no screenshot event.
- What Canvas does log: Stopped viewing when the quiz page loses focus, and Resumed when you come back, with times.
- Taking the screenshot to ChatGPT or another app is that page switch, on every question.
- Proctored exams are different: LockDown Browser disables screen capture, and Honorlock and Proctorio can record your screen.
Our pickCanvas Quiz Solver reads the question in the page and shows the answer right below it. No screenshot, no second app, no copy-paste into ChatGPT, so no page switch for the quiz log to record.
Add to Chrome - freeCan Canvas see if you screenshot?
No. Print Screen on Windows, Command-Shift-4 on a Mac, the screen capture key on a Chromebook and the buttons on a phone are all handled by the operating system, not by the web page. Canvas is a web page. No web standard gives a page an event for "the user took a screenshot", and none of Instructure's quiz log guides describes one.
A web page can only capture your screen through the Screen Capture API, and MDN notes that "the user will still be prompted for permission to use them". Canvas asks for nothing like that during a quiz. If something does ask for your screen or camera, it is a proctoring tool your school added.
One honest detail. A page that has focus receives key presses, and the web's list of key values includes "PrintScreen", so a site could in theory notice that key on some computers. Canvas stores no key presses in the quiz log, and no screenshot event either.
The same goes for the Canvas Student app. Instructure's guides for taking a quiz in the app on iOS and Android mention no screenshot alert.
What Canvas logs during a quiz instead
On a Classic Quiz, every line in the quiz log carries one of four statuses from Instructure's quiz log guide, each with a time. Here is what a screenshot does to each one:
| Quiz log status | When Canvas writes it | Does a screenshot cause it? |
|---|---|---|
| Viewed (and possibly read) a question | You are active on the quiz page but have not answered. | No. You are on the question either way. |
| Answered a question | You answer, change an answer, or autosave saves it. | No. |
| Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page | You close the tab, open a new tab, or go to a different program. | Only if the capture tool, or the app you paste into, takes focus from the quiz page. |
| Resumed | You come back to the quiz. | After any Stopped viewing above. |
The two focus lines are stored as page_blurred and page_focused with "event_data": null, so the log never names the app or site you went to. A screenshot sitting on your desktop is not in it at all. Instructure also says Quiz Log Auditing "is currently a course opt-in feature", logs "are only retained for six months", and they "are not intended to validate academic integrity or identify cheating for a quiz".
New Quizzes keeps its own log on the Moderate page, which "includes moments of stopping and resuming the quiz". The full walk-through is in a Canvas quiz log, line by line, and the line students worry about most is explained in what Stopped viewing means.
Can Canvas tell if you screenshot? Device by device
The answer is the same on every device for a normal Canvas quiz: no screenshot event. What changes is whether the capture takes focus away from the quiz page, and what a proctored exam does.
| How you capture | Normal Canvas quiz | Proctored exam |
|---|---|---|
| Windows: Print Screen or Snipping Tool | No screenshot event. If the Snipping Tool window takes focus, Stopped viewing. | Screen capture disabled in LockDown Browser. |
| Mac: Command-Shift-3, 4 or 5 | No screenshot event. Opening the image in another app is a page switch. | Screen capture disabled in LockDown Browser. |
| Chromebook screen capture | No screenshot event. | Honorlock and Proctorio can record the screen when the exam turns it on. |
| Phone photo of the laptop screen | Nothing. The phone is outside the page. | A webcam can see it; Honorlock says it flags visible phones. |
| Screenshot in the Canvas Student app | Instructure's app quiz guides mention no screenshot alert. | Depends on the proctoring tool and the school's settings. |
| Screenshot pasted into ChatGPT | The screenshot is not logged. Switching to ChatGPT is: Stopped viewing, then Resumed. | Tabs blocked or closed (Honorlock, Proctorio); task switching disabled (LockDown Browser). |
Can teachers see screenshots on a proctored exam?
A proctored exam is the one place where screen capture is watched. Each tool says so on its own pages:
- Respondus LockDown Browser. "Printing and screen capture functions are disabled", and it "blocks hundreds of common and advanced methods of digital cheating", screen recording included (Respondus). With Respondus Monitor, "students use a webcam to record themselves during an online exam".
- Honorlock. Its extension can "Capture the content of the test taker's screen", but "will only record the test taker's screen if the 'Screen Record' toggle is enabled" (Honorlock permissions). Its FAQ says that, if your school asks, "we will collect a webcam video recording that includes your desktop activity and audio recording".
- Proctorio. Its homepage lists ScreenBlock, which "Blocks screenshots and videos", and settings such as Disable Clipboard, Block New Tabs and Disable Extensions. Its privacy policy names Record Screen as an option, and its FAQ says it "only records during an exam and if the video/audio/screen recording settings are enabled by the exam administrator".
We give no way around any of this. Canvas Quiz Solver does not run in LockDown Browser, and Honorlock and Proctorio can turn Chrome extensions off, so it is for normal, unproctored Canvas quizzes. More in does LockDown Browser record you, Honorlock and Proctorio on Canvas.
Canvas quiz screenshot into ChatGPT: the slow way
Most people who search for a Canvas quiz screenshot want to send the question to ChatGPT or a snap-and-solve app. The screenshot is the part Canvas cannot see. Everything after it is what the log is built for. Per question:
- Take the screenshot and crop it to the question.
- Switch to ChatGPT or the app. On a Classic Quiz, the log writes Stopped viewing.
- Paste, wait for the answer, read it.
- Switch back to the quiz. The log writes Resumed, and then your answer, each with a time.
On a 20-question quiz, that is 20 trips away from the page, and the clock keeps running: timed quizzes "do not pause if the student navigates away from the quiz" (Instructure quiz options). A crop can also cut off an answer choice or a diagram label, and the AI only sees what is in the picture. A phone photo of the screen avoids the page switch, but you retype or carry every answer back by hand. For the full comparison of tools, see using ChatGPT on a Canvas quiz and the best AI quiz solver for Canvas.
The screenshot is not the problem. Leaving the quiz page to use it is. Canvas Quiz Solver skips both: it reads the question in the page, image questions included, and puts the answer right below it, inside the Canvas quiz page. You do not open a second tab, you do not paste a screenshot into ChatGPT, and you do not switch windows, so there is no page switch for the quiz log to record. It works on Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes, and you can start free.
Answers without a screenshot: Canvas Quiz Solver
Canvas Quiz Solver is a Chrome extension that answers on the Canvas quiz page:
- Add Canvas Quiz Solver to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open your Canvas quiz as usual. A Get Answer button appears on each question.
- Click it. The answer appears right below the question, inside the Canvas quiz page.
No screenshot and no second app. It reads the question text and the images on the page, such as diagrams and charts, so there is no crop to cut anything off. The log still shows what it shows for every student: which questions you viewed and when you answered.
A web page cannot list the Chrome extensions you have installed. Chrome runs an extension's content script in an isolated world. More in does Canvas detect Chrome extensions.
It reads multiple choice, true or false, short answer, fill in the blank, matching, numerical, essay, ordering and categorization questions, on Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. The answers come from AI, so they can be wrong: read each one before you pick it.
What it is not: it runs in Chrome on a computer (Mac, Windows PC or a Chromebook that allows extensions), not on a phone. It does not run in LockDown Browser, and it is not for proctored exams. You can start free, then one plan is $14.99 a month. Subscribe before the quiz starts, because checkout opens in its own tab.
Canvas screenshot myths
- "Canvas sends your teacher a screenshot alert." There is no such event in the quiz log, the Canvas API or the Moderate page.
- "Canvas records your screen." Not on its own. The log is a list of events and times. Screen recording comes only from a proctoring tool your school adds, and you grant it permission before the exam.
- "A screenshot is safe, so ChatGPT is safe." The screenshot is not logged, but the switch to ChatGPT is, as Stopped viewing and Resumed.
- "Come back within 15 seconds and it does not count." The figure comes from an Instructure Community forum answer, not from Instructure's documentation, which gives no time threshold.

Common questions
Can Canvas see if you screenshot?
No. A screenshot is taken by your computer or phone, outside the web page, and the Canvas quiz log has no screenshot event. What Canvas can log is the quiz page losing focus: if your screenshot tool or the app you paste into takes focus, the log writes Stopped viewing, then Resumed when you come back.
Can Canvas detect screenshots?
Not on a normal quiz. The Classic quiz log has four statuses: viewed a question, answered a question, stopped viewing the quiz-taking page, and resumed. The Canvas API also documents flagged questions. None is a screenshot. A proctored exam is different: LockDown Browser disables screen capture, and Proctorio offers ScreenBlock, which blocks screenshots and videos.
Does Canvas know if you screenshot a quiz?
No, not the screenshot itself. Canvas knows which questions you viewed, when you answered, and when the quiz page lost and got back focus. Switching to ChatGPT or another app to read a screenshot is a page switch, and that is what the log records, with times.
Can Canvas tell if you screenshot on a Chromebook, Mac or Windows PC?
No. The shortcut is handled by the operating system, and no web standard tells a page that a screenshot was taken. A page that has focus can see some key presses, but the Canvas quiz log has no key or screenshot event. A capture tool that opens its own window can take focus, which writes Stopped viewing.
Can teachers see if you screenshot on Canvas?
Not on a normal Canvas quiz. A teacher sees a log of events and times, not your screen. On a proctored exam they can see more: Honorlock can record your screen when the school turns Screen Record on, and Proctorio can record the screen if the exam administrator enables it.
Can you screenshot in LockDown Browser?
Respondus says that in LockDown Browser printing and screen capture functions are disabled, and that it blocks screen recording. This guide gives no way around it. Canvas Quiz Solver does not run in LockDown Browser.
Is it detected if I screenshot a Canvas quiz into ChatGPT?
The screenshot is not logged. Going to ChatGPT is: on a Classic Quiz, the log writes Stopped viewing when you switch to another tab or program and Resumed when you come back, on every question, with times. Canvas Quiz Solver shows the answer right below the question instead, so there is no switch to log.
Does Canvas Quiz Solver take screenshots?
No. It reads the question from the Canvas quiz page, including images that are on the page, and shows the answer right below the question. It works on Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes in Chrome on a computer. You can start free, then it is $14.99 a month.
