1. Canvas Quiz Solver: best for Canvas quizzes
Canvas Quiz Solver adds a button to each question on a Canvas quiz. Click it, and the AI answer shows up right below that question. The listing names the question types it covers, from multiple choice, matching and ordering to numeric, essay and image questions such as diagrams and charts.
It works on Classic Quizzes and on New Quizzes, the newer quiz engine that loads inside a frame on the page.
What the Canvas quiz log records, and what it does not
Where the answer shows up matters because of the quiz log. Instructure says the entry "Stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page" "displays when a student navigates away from the quiz (closes the browser tab, opens a new browser tab, or navigates to a different program)", and "Resumed" shows when the student comes back.
The log records when you left, not where you went. The Canvas API stores these events as page_blurred and page_focused with "event_data": null, so no tab or app name is saved. Quiz Log Auditing "is currently a course opt-in feature", logs "are only retained for six months", and Instructure says they "are not intended to validate academic integrity or identify cheating for a quiz". A second tab with ChatGPT is exactly the page switch the log is built to note. Canvas Quiz Solver puts the answer right below the question, inside the Canvas quiz page. You do not open a second tab, you do not copy the question into ChatGPT, and you do not switch windows, so there is no page switch for the quiz log to record. 2. Better Canvas (now BetterCampus): best all-round upgrade
Better Canvas is the most installed extension on this list. Its store listing is now called BetterCampus (prev. BetterCanvas), and its one-line summary is "Feature packed extension for Canvas." The listing names a dark mode you can schedule, dozens of user-made themes, custom dashboards, a to-do list with assignment previews, a GPA calculator for college and high school, and dashboard notes and grades. There is also a Firefox version.
Is Better Canvas free?
Yes, there is a free plan. The BetterCampus website lists two plans. Free, at $0, gives community themes, a basic to-do list and limited study tools. Pro, at $119 a year, adds unlimited themes, calendar sync, flashcards and advanced grade tracking.
Is Better Canvas safe?
No listing can prove an extension is safe, but the public facts are good:
- The Chrome Web Store shows the label "The publisher has a good record with no history of violations."
- The publisher, BetterCampus, lists a New York business address and a D-U-N-S number.
- Its privacy section declares that it handles "User activity", and that the data is not sold to third parties outside the approved use cases.
- The listing links its source code on GitHub (AGPL-3.0 license). The last push there was on May 7, 2025, so the public code may lag behind version 9.8.13.
- The listing says it "is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Instructure or Canvas LMS".
Several websites use the Better Canvas name, so install it from the Chrome Web Store listing itself.
Does Better Canvas still work?
Yes. The listing was updated on September 19, 2026, six days before we checked. The main change is the name: if you cannot find Better Canvas in the store, search for BetterCampus.
3. Tasks for Canvas: best for weekly deadlines
Tasks for Canvas is "A better to-do list sidebar for Canvas, Blackboard, and D2L Brightspace." On the Canvas dashboard it draws colored rings, one per course, that fill as you finish the week's work. Next to them is a to-do list with the due date and point value of each assignment, plus recent announcements. You can add your own tasks, filter by course and sync Gradescope assignments.
The listing asks you in capital letters to reload Canvas after you install it. Its publisher is also BetterCampus. The description says it "does not collect or share user data", while the privacy section of the same listing declares that it handles user activity. Pick it if you want the to-do rings without the themes of Better Canvas.
4. Canvas Course Downloader & Exporter: best for saving course files
Canvas Course Downloader & Exporter will "Download, export, and back up Canvas LMS course files, pages, assignments, grades, and more into organized folders." Its listing says it keeps the folder structure, saves pages and assignments as HTML and grades as a CSV file, and can take several courses at once, past ones included.
It works on instructure.com and on a school's own Canvas domain, with no API token to set up. The listing says: "The extension only communicates with your Canvas instance. No data is sent anywhere else." The code is open source (MIT license).
5. Canvas Dark Mode: best for dark mode only
Canvas Dark Mode does one thing: "Dark Mode for Canvas." The listing says it works on any "instructure.com/*" domain; if your school runs Canvas on its own domain, the developer asks you to contact him to add it. The developer declares that it will not collect or use your data.
Its last update was in August 2022, the oldest on this list. Better Canvas has dark mode too, with recent updates.
6. Canvas GPA Calculator: best for tracking your GPA
Canvas GPA Calculator is "A Chrome Extension that automatically calculates your Canvas grades and GPA". The listing says it imports your Canvas grades and calculates your course and overall GPA, even on courses that have auto-grading turned off by default. The store shows the label "Created by the owner of the listed website", and the developer declares that it will not collect or use your data.
7. Canvas Final Grade Calculator: best for "what do I need on the final?"
Canvas Final Grade Calculator "Automatically fetches Canvas class grade and calculates the required score on your final exam to receive your desired grade." You open the Grades page of a course, open the extension and type the grade you want. Its privacy section declares that it handles website content.

Can Canvas see which extensions you use?
No. Canvas is a web page, and a web page cannot list the Chrome extensions you have installed. Chrome runs extension code in an isolated world, apart from the page's own scripts. A school-managed Chromebook is the other limit. The Chrome Web Store help page says "your organization might block some extensions". That is a school setting, not Canvas watching you.
How to install a Canvas extension
- Open the extension's Chrome Web Store listing. Each name above links to it.
- Click Add to Chrome, then confirm with Add extension.
- Reload your Canvas tab so the extension can load on the page.
- Pin it from the puzzle-piece icon next to the address bar if you want its button in view.
