How to use ChatGPT on a Canvas quiz, and what Canvas logs
Students use AI on a Canvas quiz in four ways. What matters is whether the quiz page loses focus.
- ChatGPT in a second tab writes Stopped viewing and Resumed, with times, on every trip.
- Gemini in Chrome and AI browsers: no documentation says how they affect the quiz log.
- The log never names a site, app or AI tool.
- An in-page extension shows the answer next to the question, so you never leave the page.
Our pickCanvas Quiz Solver: one button inside the quiz page, and the answer appears next to the question. No second tab, no copy-paste.
Add to Chrome - freeWhat the Canvas quiz log can record
Canvas only sees its own page. During a Classic Quiz, the quiz log lists four kinds of event, each with a timestamp: viewed a question, answered a question, stopped viewing the Canvas quiz-taking page, and resumed. New Quizzes shows its own log on the Moderate page, with "moments of stopping and resuming the quiz".
The quiz submission events API stores the focus pair as page_blurred and page_focused, with no tab, URL or app name. A page can tell when it loses focus or is hidden, not where you went. So the question for every AI method is: does it take focus from the quiz page? More in what "Stopped viewing" means.
Canvas Quiz Solver puts one button inside the Canvas quiz page. Click it and the answer appears next to the question. No second tab, no copy-paste, no window switch. It works on Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes, and you can start free.
Four ways to use AI on a Canvas quiz, compared
| Method | Leaves the quiz page | What the log can show | Speed |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT in a second tab or window | Yes, on every question | Stopped viewing, then Resumed, with times. The site is not named. | Slow: copy, switch, paste, wait, switch back |
| Gemini in Chrome side panel | The quiz stays on screen. Effect on focus: not documented | Not verified. No event names Gemini. | Faster: no tab switch, but you still ask per question |
| AI browser (agentic browser) | Depends on the browser. Not documented | Not verified. Every saved answer is still logged with a time. | Varies by browser |
| In-page extension (Canvas Quiz Solver) | No | Viewed and Answered, as for every student. The extension causes no Stopped viewing. | One click per question |
1. ChatGPT in a second tab or window
The method the quiz log was built to see. Instructure lists opening a new tab and moving to a different program as triggers for Stopped viewing. Each trip writes Stopped viewing and Resumed, and the gap between them is timed. The log never says ChatGPT. A split screen counts when you click or type in the other window, which you must do to paste. More in how Canvas detects tab switching and whether Canvas detects ChatGPT.
2. Gemini in Chrome side panel
Gemini in Chrome opens in the same window as the quiz, so the question stays on screen. Whether typing in that panel makes the quiz page lose focus is not documented by Google or Instructure, and we have not tested it, so we do not claim it either way. What is documented: no quiz log event names Gemini, and Honorlock's test taker guide says its app "prevents the use of native browser AI Tools like Google Lens and Gemini" on proctored exams.
3. An AI browser
AI browsers, also called agentic browsers, build an assistant in, and some can act on a page for you. We have not tested one on a Canvas quiz, and Instructure documents nothing about them. Two things hold for any browser: each saved answer is logged with a time, and in New Quizzes, admins can see the browser and operating system in multi-session details. What an AI browser reports there is not verified.
4. An in-page extension
An extension works inside the quiz page: it reads the question and shows the answer next to it, with no tab or window to switch to. A web page cannot list your installed extensions: Chrome runs an extension's content scripts in an isolated world. The log shows Viewed and Answered with times, as it does for every student.
Accuracy: where AI answers go wrong
- Missing context. Copy only the question text into ChatGPT and the AI may not see the answer options or a picture in the question.
- Shuffled options. Instructors can shuffle answers, so "the answer is B" from a chat may not match your screen.
- Any AI can be wrong. Read each answer before you pick it, and check it against your course material.
Proctored exams are a different case: LockDown Browser is a separate browser where Chrome extensions never load. This guide is about regular Canvas quizzes.
Canvas Quiz Solver: AI answers inside the quiz page
Canvas Quiz Solver is a Chrome extension that does the AI step on the quiz page itself. Click the button on a question and the answer appears next to it. No second tab, no copy-paste into ChatGPT, no window switch, so there is no page switch for the quiz log to record. The log still shows which questions you viewed and when you answered, as for every student.
It works on Classic Quizzes and New Quizzes. Start free, then one plan at $9.99/month. AI answers can be wrong, so read each one before you pick it.

Common questions
Can Canvas tell if you use ChatGPT on a quiz?
Not by name. If you click over to ChatGPT in another tab or window, the quiz log writes Stopped viewing and then Resumed, each with a time. No event names the site or AI tool. If you never leave the quiz page, there is no focus change to log.
Does Gemini in Chrome show up in the Canvas quiz log?
No quiz log event names Gemini. Whether using the Gemini panel makes the quiz page lose focus is not documented by Google or Instructure, and we have not verified it. Honorlock says its app blocks Gemini on proctored exams.
Can an AI browser take a Canvas quiz for you?
Some AI browsers can act on a page for you, but we have not tested one on a Canvas quiz and Instructure documents nothing about them. Every answer you save is still logged with a time, and AI answers can be wrong, so read each one.
What is the fastest way to use AI on a Canvas quiz?
Get the answer on the quiz page itself. Canvas Quiz Solver adds one button inside the quiz page, and the answer appears next to the question. There is no second tab and no copy-paste, and you can start free.
Can teachers see my Chrome extensions on Canvas?
No. A web page cannot list the Chrome extensions you have installed, because Chrome runs extension content scripts in an isolated world. Canvas gives instructors no extension report.
