How to cheat on IXL, and what your teacher can actually see
Students get outside help on IXL practice all the time, but IXL keeps a full record: every question, your answer next to the right one, your time and your SmartScore by session. Auto-answer bots leave a pace no person keeps, and IXL's terms ban them. The low-risk way is to check an answer in the page and still answer at your own pace.
- The Questions Log shows your teacher each question, your answer and the correct answer.
- The practice timer counts real practice time and pauses when you go idle, even when it is hidden.
- IXL questions are computer-generated, so answer keys and Quizlet sets rarely match yours.
- IXL's help pages document no tab log and no AI detector for practice.
- IXL's terms ban software that takes autonomous action on IXL: that is what a bot is.
Our pickCanvas Quiz Solver now works on IXL practice skills. It shows the answer under the question, in the same tab, and you pick or type it and submit it yourself. It stays off on proctored pages.
How to cheat on IXL: the short answer
Most students who search how to cheat on IXL want one thing: to finish an assigned skill without losing an hour to it. That is a fair thing to want. A skill can take a long time, and one miss near the end can drop your SmartScore a long way.
The honest answer has three parts. First, IXL does not watch your screen, but it keeps a detailed record of every question you answer, and your teacher can read it. Second, IXL makes a new question every time, so shortcuts built on someone else's answers rarely fit. Third, tools that answer and submit for you leave a pattern that looks nothing like a student, and IXL's terms forbid them.
This guide goes through each trick students try, what it leaves in IXL, and where the line is. Every IXL fact links to IXL's own help center or terms. Where IXL does not document something, we say so. This guide is for students 13 and older.
What your teacher sees in IXL
Your teacher does not see your screen. They see IXL Analytics, the reports built from your practice. These are the parts that matter here:
| Report | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Questions Log | "A list of every question the student has answered in the skill", newest first, with "the correct answer and the student's answer". A teacher can pick Show missed questions only, and print it (IXL: How can I use the Questions Log?). |
| Skill summary | Your current SmartScore, questions answered and time spent, and a chart of your SmartScore over time, "broken down by each session". |
| Practice timer | Counts the time you actually spend practicing. It pauses when it detects inactivity, and the data goes to Analytics (IXL: How does the practice timer work?). A hidden timer still tracks time (IXL: Can I hide the timer?). |
| Time Spent report | For schools: time per student in practice, assessments, games, videos and quizzes (IXL: Time Spent report). |
| Other tabs, copy and paste, AI | Not documented in any IXL help page we read for skill practice. |
From IXL's help center (sources below). "Not documented" means we found nothing in IXL's public help pages. It does not prove that no such signal exists: any web page can notice when it loses focus.
So the real risk on IXL is not a camera. It is a record that does not look like you: forty questions in four minutes, a perfect run in a skill you missed all week, or a SmartScore that jumps to 100 in a session with almost no time on the timer. IXL even tells teachers that students "with a high volume of questions answered and little SmartScore progress are the best candidates for intervention", so they do read the chart. Tabs, screenshots, AI and Live Classroom are covered in can IXL detect cheating.
The IXL tricks students try, ranked by risk
Ask Reddit or TikTok how to cheat on IXL and the same handful of tricks come up. The table puts each one next to what it leaves in IXL and how well it fits IXL questions, which IXL calls "unlimited computer-generated questions" (IXL: How many questions are there?).
| Trick | What it leaves in IXL | Fits your questions? |
|---|---|---|
| Auto-answer scripts, bots and add-ons | The highest risk. Answers come in at machine pace, a wrong one is submitted before you see it, and IXL's terms ban this kind of software. | Sometimes, until IXL changes its page and the script breaks. |
| Someone else logs in and does it | A stranger's pace and sessions in your log. IXL's terms also say you will not give your login to a third party. | Yes, until a quiz in class shows what you know. |
| Inspect element | Your real answer. Editing the page changes your screen, not what IXL records in the Questions Log. | No. It does not give you the answer. |
| Answer keys, PDFs and Quizlet sets | Nothing documented. The risk is the answer: a wrong one drops your SmartScore. | Rarely. Your numbers and words are different. |
| ChatGPT or Google in a second tab | No documented tab log. You retype each question, then carry the answer back. The timer keeps counting. | Yes, if you retype it right. Graphs and tiles are hard to describe. |
| A phone camera or a second device | Nothing about the phone. Slow, and you still type the answer in. | Good on plain equations, weaker on passages and drag-and-drop. |
| Answer shown under the question (Canvas Quiz Solver) | No second tab. Your answers and time are recorded, as for every student. You read the answer and enter it yourself, at your own pace. | Yes. It reads the question on your screen: boxes, tiles, ordering, sorting and graphs. |
"What it leaves" is for skill practice, from IXL's own help pages and terms.
Inspect element
The most watched IXL videos show a student opening inspect element and changing the page. That edits a copy of the page in your own browser. IXL keeps what you actually submit: the Questions Log shows your answer next to the correct answer. Inspect element can make your screen show 100 in the corner; your teacher's report still shows the real score.
Answer keys and Quizlet sets
Search results for IXL answers are full of skill-code lists, flashcards and PDFs on unrelated sites. IXL builds a new question each time, so a list for "A.1" from another student, another grade or last year answers different questions. A worked method helps; a list of answers does not. Our IXL math answers and IXL language arts answers pages show the methods with made-up questions.
A second tab with ChatGPT
This works, but it is slow on IXL. Fractions, exponents and symbols have to be retyped, a graph has to be described in words, and a passage has to be pasted. Then you carry the answer back. Every trip adds time to a timer that only counts real practice.
Why auto-answer bots get caught
Search for IXL cheats and you find scripts on GitHub and Greasy Fork, browser add-ons and "IXL bot" extensions that read the question, fill the answer and press Submit. They look like the fastest route. They are also the easiest to spot, for three reasons.
- The pace is not human. The Questions Log lists every question, and the timer counts real practice time. Dozens of questions with a few seconds each, at any hour, is a pattern a teacher can see at a glance.
- You do not see the misses. A bot submits before you read anything. When it gets one wrong, the SmartScore drops and you find out later. In the Challenge Zone after 90, where IXL puts "the most difficult questions in a skill" (IXL: What is the Challenge Zone?), that costs the most.
- IXL's terms forbid it. IXL's terms of service say you will not use "an Agent (i.e., any software or service that takes autonomous or semi-autonomous action on behalf of, or at the instruction of, any person or entity)" with the service. A bot is exactly that.
That is why Canvas Quiz Solver is not a bot, on purpose. It shows an answer and takes no action on the page. More on that on our IXL answers page.
Tricks on a school Chromebook
Many students do IXL on a Chromebook the school manages. On those, the school decides which extensions you can add. Google's admin help explains that schools can allow or block apps and extensions for their users (Google: Allow or block apps and extensions).
If Chrome will not let you add an extension on a school Chromebook, that is your school's setting. The videos that promise to unlock a school Chromebook ask you to break your school's rules, and this guide does not cover them. On your own laptop or home computer with Chrome, you can add extensions as usual.
The answer shown under the question
Every trick above sends you somewhere else for the answer, or lets a script answer for you. Canvas Quiz Solver is a Chrome extension that does neither. It reads the IXL question on your screen and shows the answer right under it, and you stay the one who answers.
How it works on IXL, in 3 steps:
- Add Canvas Quiz Solver to Chrome on your laptop. It is the same extension Canvas students use.
- Open your IXL skill on a question and click the extension's toolbar icon once. Answers turn on in that tab at once; tap "Keep it on for this site" in the popup so it stays on next time.
- Click the small icon under the question to see the answer, then pick or type it yourself and press Submit.
Off on proctored pages. It clicks, types and submits nothing on IXL.
- No second tab. The answer is in the tab you are already in.
- No retyping. It reads fill-in boxes, one-choice and select-all tiles, the symbol pad, ordering, sorting, drop-downs and passages.
- Graphs: the card says what to draw, such as the points to plot or the endpoints on a number line, and you draw it.
- Discreet by default. A small icon under each question; the answer shows only when you click it. Turn discreet mode off in the popup for a Get Answer button.
- You stay in control. You read the answer, compare it with yours, and submit at your own pace.
It works on practice skills in math, language arts, science, social studies and Spanish. It does not run on the IXL Diagnostic. Answers come from AI and can be wrong, so check the ones that count. Nothing here promises a SmartScore.
It is the same account and plan as on Canvas, McGraw Hill and ALEKS. You get free answers to try, and Unlimited is $14.99 a month or $48.99 for a 4-month semester. On a site we do not read yet? Snap the question.
What students ask about cheating on IXL
The same questions come up on Reddit, TikTok and Quora. Here are plain answers, checked against IXL's own help pages.
- "Can my teacher see my wrong answers?" Yes. The Questions Log shows your answer next to the correct one, and a teacher can filter it to missed questions only.
- "Does IXL know when I switch tabs?" IXL's help pages do not describe a tab log for practice. The timer does pause when it detects inactivity, so time away from the question does not count as practice.
- "Why did my SmartScore drop so much?" IXL says the score weighs question difficulty and consistency, not only the percent right, and that a wrong answer adjusts it (IXL help). Our IXL SmartScore guide explains it.
- "Can I get the answers by skill code?" Not ones that match. Codes like A.1 or H.1 name a different skill in each grade, and the questions are generated fresh.
- "Can I hide how long I spent?" No. Even when a teacher hides the timer, IXL says "the time spent practicing is still tracked".
What happens if a teacher thinks you cheated
The teacher decides, not IXL. IXL gives them the evidence: the Questions Log with every question and answer, the SmartScore chart by session, and the time from the practice timer. A teacher who doubts a score can also print the Questions Log with the answers hidden and ask you to redo the questions; IXL suggests exactly that for review.
From there, your school's academic honesty policy decides what happens next, and your teacher applies it. Know the platform rules too: IXL's terms ban sharing your login with a third party and using software that acts on IXL by itself.
The safest path is the boring one: answer at your own pace, use help to check your work, and learn the method before the quiz in class. If you are on Canvas instead, read how to cheat on Canvas for what Canvas logs.

Common questions
Can teachers see IXL answers?
Yes. IXL's Questions Log shows a teacher every question you answered in a skill, newest first, with your answer next to the correct answer, plus your SmartScore, the number of questions and the time spent. A teacher can also filter it to only the questions you missed.
Can IXL detect cheating?
IXL's help pages describe no cheating detector, tab log or AI check for practice. What IXL does keep is a full record: every question and answer, your time from the practice timer, and your SmartScore by session. A pace or score that does not look like you is what teachers notice.
Does IXL know if you use ChatGPT?
IXL documents no AI detector. It records your answers and how long you practice, so a run of perfect answers at an odd pace can stand out in the Questions Log. Retyping each question into a chatbot also takes time, and graphs are hard to describe.
Can you get a SmartScore of 100 on IXL?
Yes, it is how IXL marks a skill as mastered. IXL says the number of questions it takes varies for every student, and after 90 the Challenge Zone holds the hardest questions in the skill. Nothing on this page promises a score.
Is using an extension on IXL against the rules?
IXL's terms of service ban software that takes autonomous or semi-autonomous action on IXL, which covers auto-answer bots. Canvas Quiz Solver takes no action on the page. Your school's academic honesty policy decides what counts as cheating in your class, so check your syllabus.
How do you get answers on IXL without a bot?
Add Canvas Quiz Solver to Chrome, open your IXL skill and click the extension icon once. The answer shows under each question in the same tab, and you pick or type it and press Submit yourself.
